Defying earlier predictions of a slowdown, the month saw the creation of 216,000 jobs, surpassing expectations set by economists who had forecasted a gain of 170,000. This performance capped off a year of steady job growth, with a total of nearly 2.7 million jobs added, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics December 2023 jobs report.
