The growing number of companies mandating a return to the office underscores how the balance of power in the labor market has shifted — from employees during the COVID-19 pandemic to employers amid a new wave of layoffs. According to Aspen’s data, U.S. remote job listings totaled 192,956 in the end of April, marking a 3.5% increase year-over-year but a sharper 5.9% decline month-over-month (Figure 7). Could this drop indicate a cooling in remote hiring demand after a period of relative stability in March?
