The growing number of companies mandating a return to the office underscores how the balance of power in the labor market has shifted — from employees during the COVID-19 pandemic to employers amid a new wave of layoffs. According to Aspen’s data, U.S. remote job listings totaled 192,956 in the end of April, marking a 3.5% increase year-over-year but a sharper 5.9% decline month-over-month (Figure 7). Could this drop indicate a cooling in remote hiring demand after a period of relative stability in March?
Overall, April marked a pullback in job postings, with total U.S. listings declining 2.8% month-over-month (MoM) and down 3.8% year-over-year (YoY) (Figure 1). This follows March’s growth, which was part of the Q1 rebound after the end-of-year hiring slowdown. The dip in April suggests that the momentum gained earlier in the quarter may be tapering as employers grow more cautious amid growing economic uncertainty tied to ongoing global trade tensions.
April saw a slowdown in job postings and creation, signaling growing employer caution amid economic uncertainty. While national hiring cooled, North Carolina defied the trend with job growth and rising salaries, especially in Sales. Remote job postings dipped MoM despite YoY growth, suggesting a potential softening in demand. Meanwhile, salary transparency continues to gain ground.
