2026 Job Seeker Trends Report

WILMINGTON, DE (October 20, 2025) — TopResume, the world’s largest resume-writing service, today released its 2026 Job Seeker Trends Report, offering data-driven insights and predictions to help professionals prepare for the year ahead. Drawing on responses from 2,000 full-time U.S. professionals, the report uncovers how ghosting, AI barriers, and burnout are shaping today’s job search — and how candidates can prepare for success in 2026.

“Ghosting — by both employers and candidates — continues to be one of the most demoralizing experiences in the job search,” said Amanda Augustine, TopResume Career Expert and a Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC). “Combined with the pressures of AI-driven hiring and economic uncertainty, it’s no wonder job seekers are feeling anxious. Key Findings from the 2026 Job Seeker Trends Report:

  • Ghosting is Rampant: Over 70% of job seekers say they’ve been ghosted by employers, and nearly half admit they’ve ghosted recruiters in return. Gen Z and Millennials report the highest rates of ghosting on both sides.
  • Job Search Burnout is Real: Nearly two-thirds (68%) of job hunters say the search itself is hurting their mental health.
  • The AI Paradox: More than one-third (38%) of job seekers used AI tools like ChatGPT to create their applications, yet most (82%) worry those same algorithms are automatically rejecting their resumes.
  • Flexibility Over Finance: Roughly one in five (22%) professionals say they wouldn’t take a job that lacks flexibility — even if it came with higher pay.

According to Augustine, professionals can start now to position themselves for a stronger, more confident job search in 2026.

Consistency across these platforms builds trust with recruiters and hiring managers. Use AI tools like ChatGPT to help with structure or brainstorming, but always add your personal voice and authentic accomplishments so your materials sound human, not robotic.

3. Build Momentum Before You Need It

Networking isn’t something you start after you’ve decided to leave your job — it’s something you nurture year-round. Reconnect with former colleagues, mentors, and industry peers, and engage in professional communities. Treat your job search like a project: carve out time, set micro-goals, and protect your mental health along the way. Small, steady progress beats burnout every time.
