BALTIMORE — Amid a historic surge in job search fraud and sophisticated AI-driven impersonation schemes, the National Résumé Writers’ Association (NRWA) launched a free public resource to help vulnerable job seekers navigate an increasingly predatory hiring landscape.

The organization’s new Job Seeker Safety Center serves as an independent hub designed to help applicants spot fraudulent recruiters, verify professional credentials, and protect themselves against identity theft and financial fraud.

A $500 Million Fraud Trend Accelerated by Generative AI

The launch comes in response to what consumer protection officials describe as a rapidly escalating crisis. According to data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), reported financial losses from job and employment agency scams skyrocketed from $90 million in 2020 to $501 million in 2024—a more than five-fold increase in just four years.

Experts attribute much of the recent surge to the widespread availability of generative AI tools. Fraudulent actors can now easily generate convincing fake recruiter profiles, synthesize legitimate-sounding job offers, and even produce realistic video or voice interviews in minutes to deceive targets.

The “Resume Rewrite” Trap

One of the most pervasive schemes directly targets both job seekers and legitimate career professionals. Scammers, posing as recruiters with enticing job opportunities, contact applicants and claim their resumes must be rewritten before they can be officially submitted. The victim is then directed to a specific, paid “recommended” rewriting service.

After the job seeker pays the fee, the fake recruiter disappears—revealing that both the job opportunity and the resume writing service were entirely fabricated. In many cases, scammers hijack the real names, photos, and professional certifications of actual career coaches to build these fraudulent personas.

“Job seekers are being asked to hand over their contact information, work history, and sometimes their money to people they’ve never met, based on nothing more than a polished message,” said Cathy Lanzalaco, President of the NRWA. “Polished used to be a signal of legitimacy. It isn’t anymore. We’ve had members watch scammers lift their actual name, photo, and credentials and build a fake profile around them… It isn’t just a stolen name. It’s a stolen reputation, used to convince someone to trust a person who was never actually there.”

What the Safety Center Provides

The NRWA’s Job Seeker Safety Center organizes actionable guidance around three critical areas:

• Evaluating Job Leads: Practical steps to verify whether a recruiter, job opening, or formal offer is genuine.
• Credential Verification: Guidance on how to verify professional resume writers or career coaches before paying for external services.
• Incident Response: Clear, step-by-step instructions on what to do if an applicant has already surrendered money or sensitive personal information to a fraudster.

The platform also provides direct access to the NRWA’s member directory and explains what professional designations—such as the Nationally Certified Résumé Writer (NCRW) and Nationally Certified Online Profile Expert (NCOPE)—entail.
