Last night in mid-town New York City 250 HR pros, recruiters and others came together for another DISRUPTHR event.
If you have never been to a Disrupt event you are missing out. It’s a networking event and in between, people give 5 minute presentations on subjects related to human resources, leadership and more. Its always a sellout.
Last night saw 12 presenters including CEO’s and HR leaders such as Maury Hanigan (SparcStart), Angie Verros (Vaiatalent), Bruce Marable (Employee Cycle), Kristen Bakalar (Athena Health).
3 of the talks were about diversity and inclusion, they were sometimes brutally honest but also inspiring and heart felt. HR was called out for not being outspoken enough when it came to sexual harassment in the workplace by Deb Muller CEO of HR Acuity. Her #NowWhat talk ended the evening.
Kristen Bakalar, Director of Leadership at Athena Health had the line of the night when when she talked about (white) “privilege” in the workplace. I believe the quote was “it’s more appropriate now to talk about my pussy than it is privilege“….recommending that in the workplace we need to include more voices and skin colors in the conversation.
A few other bullet point takeaways…
- Go back to your HR department tomorrow and get rid of one policy…
- Both employee and manager should own the job description…
- Employee recognition is not working…they are only staying 4.6 years…long tenured service awards are BS
The next DisruptHR NYC takes place March 8th. Learn more at Disrupthr.co. Events are held all across the world. For my pics check out our Facebook page.
