New Unemployment Claims Linger Around 1 Million

States reported that 1 million U.S. workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Aug. 22, a decrease of 98,000 from the previous week. The total number of workers continuing to claim unemployment benefits fell to 14.5 million last week after peaking at nearly 25 million in early May, indicating a slow recovery.
