Highlights from Indeed Interactive: Search for Greatness (Part Two)

This is a preview. View original post on this site

After Tuesday night’s party at ACL Live, Indeed Interactive resumed on Wednesday morning. Once again Senior Director of Field Marketing Kevin Walker was on hand to set the scene for a packed agenda of breakouts, keynotes and more. So without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the day’s highlights.

On the main stage

This year’s theme is “Search for Greatness.” But how do you do that in a tight labor market? Indeed Chief Economist Jed Kolko had some tips for employers. First, he pointed out that although the current 2.9% unemployment rate is at its lowest in 17 years, the tightness of the labor market varies according to a number of factors, including geography and demographics. However, he made another observation: it’s likely to remain tight for the foreseeable future, so employers should get used to these conditions and adapt their strategies accordingly.

Next up was Angela Duckworth, psychologist and author of The New York Times best seller Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. We were lucky enough to have a chance to talk with Angela after her presentation.

Top-Rated Workplaces

Throughout the day we continued recognizing some of the Top-Rated Companies, according to an analysis of Indeed’s 72 million ratings and reviews. Today we congratulated representatives of Massachusetts General Hospital (winner of our top-rated hospitals ranking), Salesforce (the #1 company both for Tech and on our Fortune 500 list), as well as the top-rated company in Canada, RBC.

One powerful takeaway came from Jennifer Johnston Di Loreto, Senior Director of Employer Branding at Salesforce:

“One of the things we really encourage at our company is what we like to call “culture add”, not culture fit. We’re looking for people that align with our core values. But we really are trying to say: What’s unique that you’re bringing to the party?… That’s been a really huge part of finding people that align with us, but which keeps us diverse and inclusive.”

Breakout insights

The breakouts also continued, with interesting takes on everything from “the magic of rejection” to how the power of storytelling can be harnessed to attract top talent, to the latest insights from the intersection of talent and technology.

Writer and comedian Sarah Cooper was also on hand to share some tips in her session “100 Tricks to Appear Smart at an HR Conference.” Senior Manager of Employer Insights Aaron Schwartz examined why you’re only as great as your candidate experience.

Meanwhile, Indeed’s SVP of Product Raj Mukherjee took a look at the latest developments in recruitment technology from Indeed and how these can help employers stay ahead of emerging trends.

Raj’s focus was on the hot topic of AI—a topic that makes some people nervous about the future of their jobs—but he stressed the upside: “The world of recruitment will change with AI, but human beings will be at the center of it.”

Indeed Works

Attendees continued stopping by the Indeed Works section to get the latest news and updates from the Indeed product team.

Jimmy Lin explained the latest improvements to Indeed Resume, including resume subscriptions, “which make sourcing costs more predictable and reward recruiters who reach out to relevant candidates with great messages,” Jimmy said. “Some other new features we have include on-demand reporting about your searches, contacts and responses and updated administrative capabilities so you can easily manage subscriptions and allocate contacts across a team of recruiters.”

And at the Indeed Prime booth, Georgie May talked about how employers using Indeed Prime can quickly find interested tech candidates who are a great fit.

“Employers specify their tech hiring needs, and Indeed Prime then sorts through 10,000+ pre-vetted candidates to find those who match the hiring criteria,” Georgie said. “All of the candidates are active and ready for their next opportunity, so response rates are high and some even end up being hired for their dream job!”

Meanwhile Daniel Culbertson and Martha Gimbel from Indeed’s Hiring Lab were on hand at the “Ask an economist” booth to take questions from attendees. What was the most common question they were asked? Daniel replied: “When is the next recession coming?”

The good news? “The probably of it coming soon is about 20%” explained Martha. “But that’s always the baseline. Labor market indicators are positive.”

Afternoon on the main stage

But all good things must come to an end, and that includes Indeed Interactive 2018. Master of ceremonies Kevin Walker took to the stage one last time to introduce Paul WolfeIndeed’s SVP of Human Resources. Paul took the opportunity to share some thoughts on the importance of thinking longterm and about returning employees when it comes to the search for greatness. “Sometimes the best thing you can do for employees is to let them go—just make sure you have a way to bring them back.”

Then came “Jane Bond of innovation” Nilofer Merchant, who spoke about the “Power of Onlyness” and how it can impact our understanding of greatness. Nilofer shared some thoughts with us just after her appearance on stage:

Finally, Indeed CEO Hisayuki “Deko” Idekoba brought Indeed Interactive to a close with some thoughts on innovation. “Innovation can change people’s behavior,” said Deko, before concluding: “We are changing job seekers behavior and employers’ behavior. We hope that job seekers will say “I don’t want to go back to the old way.”

And that’s it from Indeed Interactive 2018. We thank all of our attendees for spending this time with us and hope to see you all again in 2019. And if you weren’t able to make it, come join us next year! We look forward to seeing you.
